Mari Lwyd Wall Sculpture

Here is my new Mari Lwyd Sculpture.
It is dedicated to the Welsh custom that is carried out in parts of Wales,
such as the one every year near our studio at Chepstow.
This particular Mari Lwyd can be seen at night in front of Tintern Abbey.

“The Mari Lwyd is a traditional Welsh midwinter folk custom and hobby horse. It features a decorated horse’s skull mounted on a pole,
carried by a person hidden under a white sheet, accompanied by a group of colorful characters.
Rooted in ancient folklore, the custom typically takes place between Christmas and the Twelfth Night (or in early January for Hen Galan).
It involves several key traditions and elements:

The Structure: The ghostly-looking Mari is crafted from a real horse’s skull fitted with glass or bauble eyes, a flowing white cloak, and vibrant ribbons,
bells, and sometimes rosettes. The carrier operates a hidden mechanism that snaps the horse’s spring-loaded
jaw at onlookers.The Ritual (Pwnco): The entourage travels from door to door, singing traditional verses to request entry.
The homeowners sing back, denying them entry, sparking an improvised, playful rhyme battle.
Gaining Entry: Once the homeowners run out of rhymes, the Mari Lwyd team is invited inside.
The horse then playfully chases children and causes mischief while the entourage is rewarded with food, ale, and hospitality.”

Made from Marble Mix so suitable for outdoor use.

Size: 18cms wide x 18cms high x 3.5 cms deep.
It is created with some depth to give it a 3d look.
